Literacy Class

Families Together Cooperative Nursery School offers a specially focused Literacy Enrichment class that utilizes puppet-theater, storytelling, reading, writing, dramatization, social collaboration and games to enhance children's process of becoming readers and writers. Our approach to Literacy class is highly differentiated and students will learn and grow whether they are just beginning to recognize letters or already reading and writing.

What happens in a typical Literacy Class?

Students typically begin class by drawing in their individual journals and having a teacher or parent assistant help them write text to go with the drawing. A group “Hello” time and fun literacy-based group game follows. Centers are next and include a reading station, manipulative station where students might do a puzzle or other letter-based game, a fine motor station where emerging writing skills are practiced, a more advanced writing station, and a gross motor station on the rug. The group then returns to the rug to talk with puppet “Maya Word,” guess and discuss the word of the day that Maya has brought to share, and read a book based on the word. The class concludes with each student creating an entry for that week’s class book and sharing their entry with their classmates through a “performance.” Each week, one student will have the chance to bring the class book home.

There will be four 7-8 week sessions throughout the year meeting on either Tuesday or Thursday mornings from 9:30 to 11:15 a.m.

Each class session will have up to 10 students. Nursery, Mixed Age, and Pre-K students are eligible to enroll in the class, although priority enrollment in the first session is given to returning FTCNS students and in the fourth session to Kindergarten-bound students.

What Parents Have to Say

Dylan loves coming home and showing us the words he's written down and the letters he's practicing.

I would recommend the class to anyone looking for a bit more structured literacy work in preparation for kindergarten. It also helped us gauge fine motor and handwriting skills and lay the ground work for that exciting milestone of writing our name. Plus, Deadre is wonderful and those performances are as exciting for parents as they are for the kids. Great memories I have captured on my iPhone!

I love the small size and intimate, warm feel of Literacy class. Deadre brings a calm, focused energy to her teaching that is mirrored by the students as they play, draw and write in their journals, and explore letters and words. It's such a great compliment to what kids experience in their regular classes!
– Laura Pinsof, Education Director

My daughter likes all the chances to explore writing -- through stamps, tracing words on parchment paper, following dots....she often asks to trace and write letters now and is starting to experiment with spelling out words.

I highly recommend this class to other parents -- it has been a great opportunity for our daughter to build her preliteracy skills and develop a love for reading and writing. Teacher Deadre is phenomenal!
– Gwynn Volk, Parent

I would recommend literacy to any parent that would like their child exposed to an engaging and fun way of learning letters and early reading. The class is a truly unique environment that encourages enjoyment of the written word -- both reading and writing -- through games and small- and large-motor activities that the kids love.

I have had one child go through many sessions of Literacy and another in his first session. As the assisting parent for the current Literacy class, I have the unique opportunity to see first-hand the amount of incredible creativity and tireless energy Deadre puts into developing activities that make reading, letters, and learning engaging and fun. From the personal journal-writing exercises, to letter puzzles and blocks, to the large motor "Letter Red Rover" and "letter toss", to the highlight of the class, the weekly visit from our friend Maya and the creation of the weekly book, no outlet for exposure to and interaction with letters and learning is left unexplored. The children in the class continue to amaze and impress me with their desire to learn and work in a truly unique environment, one that is different than -- but complementary to -- the daily school experience. Thank you FTCNS and Deadre for offering and creating such a meaningful experience!

Sofia really seems to enjoy learning to make the connections between letters, words, and objects. It's all very early-stage, but you can see it happening, and it's very exciting.

I would recommend the class. The impact is almost instant.
